Olympic Training Log: November 28-December 4

It’s finally time to read about some decent running workouts!

You can see a thumbnail photo of the place where I did many of my workouts while I lived in Brussels: the huge Forêt des Soignes. This forest was a delight for runners and cyclists, with its countless kilometres of trails, gravel roads and paved roads surrounded by towering beech trees.

I’ll write more details about my running workouts in a future post, but for now there is one other important thing to mention. I did all my track workouts on a gravel track that was about 370m around, rather than 400m.  For “mile” repeats I ran 4½ laps of this track, which works out to about 1665m.

Following my 1987 training log, this week starts with a Saturday.

November 28, 1987

AM: Ran hard 39 min in woods near house. Felt energetic and foot OK. 6 miles.

PM: Worked out with Paul at track. 1 mile warmup. 3 x 2½ laps (about 4 min rest), then 3 x 3½ laps (about 4 min rest). Pace about 5:10–5:18/mile. Tired from this morning but foot OK—ran clockwise. 5 miles.

November 29, 1987

AM: Did 1hr27 min long run through woods (45 min with Paul). Hit “the wall” badly at 70 min, right knee hurting. After run, knee tendon very bad, hurts to walk, popping and inflamed. 13 miles.

November 30, 1987

AM: swim 50 lengths about  37:25. Felt good in pool, but knee very bad, even walking.

PM: Weights—”pull-strength” workout. About 1 hr.

December 1, 1987

AM: Swim 50 lengths 37:28. Knee much better—doesn’t hurt when walking but still feels peculiar.

December 2, 1987

AM: Rode bike to Von Karman. Did 10-mile run*, about 66 min—felt very relaxed. Knee OK. Rode bike home. Knee feeling awkward later.

PM: Weights—”push-strength”—56 min.

*  I’ll give more details about this 10-mile run in my next post.

December 3, 1987

AM: Swim 54 lengths 40:05. Swimming well—no kids!

PM: Rode bike to Von Karman, later rode back. Knee hurting a bit.

December 4, 1987

AM: Weights. Did mixture of “pull-endurance” workout and leg exercises that didn’t hurt my knee. 78 min. Knee felt better than yesterday, still not perfect.

This week: 34 miles running, 2 Von Karman bike trips, 3 weight workouts, 3 swims.
