PM: Did track workout with Paul. Jogged to track, did 1 mile fast warmup, 2 strides. 6 x 4½ laps with 2 min recovery. Times 5:30, 5:29, 5:25, 5:24, 5:27, 5:24.*
I led all but one because Paul sick. Track muddy in spots. Knee OK but feet very sore—metatarsals and heels severely bruised. After miles did 6 x 100m fast, jogged home. 8½ miles.
* Subtract about 13 seconds to get mile times.
December 6, 1987
AM: Did long run through forest—total time 1hr31 min. Heels & metatarsals very sore at first but gradually warmed up. Left knee stiffening up a little last ½ hour. Felt good though—finished quite strong. About 13 miles.
December 7, 1987
AM: Swim 50 lengths 37:45. Felt energetic but feet very sore, especially metatarsals.
AM-2: Weights—”push-endurance” plus hyperextensions, situps, leg extensions. 68 min—worked arms to exhaustion.
December 8, 1987
AM: Did 10-mile run at Von Karman with Paul—time 65:20. Pushing hard last 3 miles—Paul slightly ahead. Feet very sore at first but warmed up—right knee hurt a bit by end. Felt good except for lack of sleep.
PM: Jogged to lake, did 4 circuits (easy-hard directions). Times 5:06, 4:58, 4:55, 4:55. Didn’t feel too tired but could feel knee. About 5½ miles.
December 9, 1987
AM: Swim 50 lengths about 37:50. Pool empty.
PM: Weights—did “pull-endurance” plus hamstring curls, situps, squats (light), snatches. 1 hr. Knee still hurting a bit. Didn’t push too hard on weights—felt “dopey.”
December 10, 1987
AM: Did 10-mile run with Paul—pushed hard, especially at start, but couldn’t stay with him. Time 64:40. Knee OK during run, but a bit sore after—feet very sore after too.
PM: Ran again in spite of sore knee but hardly felt it. Jogged to track, did 1 mile warmup + 4 strides. 6 x 1 lap, times 67, 66, 64, 65, 65, 64, 1 min rest.* Ran home. 4 miles. Felt good, even after hard run this morning!
*track was approximately 370m around.
December 11, 1987
AM: Swim 50 lengths 38:23.
AM-2: Weights “strength-endurance push” + hypers, Universal double leg raise, side leg raises. Worked hard 64 min. Knee very bad today, also have left heel bursitis again.
This week: 51 miles running, 3 swim workouts, 3 weight workouts.
