Today is George’s day. People are coming to Vancouver from far and near. Some were friends with George almost 60 years ago.
This is a day for their words, not mine. We will all be together this afternoon at the Scandinavian Community Centre in Burnaby.
My Olympic Training Log continues. It’s four months before the Olympics and I’m still not running.
My training log will be posted today (Monday) as usual, but I will add to this post in the days ahead with others’ words about George.
May 28, 1988
AM: Did weight workout for deltoids—pretty easy 61 min because had to rest between exercises. Also did hamstring curls and hyperextensions with partner on bench. Followed by 16 min hard continuous on stationary bike.
May 29, 1988
AM: Took bikes up to 400 & King sideroad, did 1½ hrs hilly riding with George, then 2 hrs continuous by myself, ending up at home. Quads tired but not burning like on Friday.
May 30, 1988
AM: Swim workout—1050m about 22:10. Ladder workout—50, 100, 150, 200, 150, 100, 50.
Noon: Leg weight workout—all leg exercises plus rowing machine—worked very hard 64 min. Quads very sore and tired.
May 31, 1988
AM: Did 2 sets of 24-min on Lifecylce—started level 6 warmup, switched to level 9 on easy parts after first set of hills. Surprised at how good I was because quads still sore—I’m getting stronger. Then went to pool, did 1 mile about 32:50! Very tired last 800m.
PM: Did 30 minutes continuous bike. Quads very sore—ride was pure torture, but not that tired after!
June 1, 1988
Noon: Did “push-strength-endurance” workout plus hamstring curls, hyperextensions, cable knee lift, situps. 76 min. Followed by 20 min continuous on bike.
June 2, 1988
AM: Did bike workout at club. 24 min on Lifecycle for warumup—level 9 after hills. Did 8 sets 3 min on bike, side leg raises, leg lift on incline bench. Hard workout—tired after.
PM: Drive to 400 and King sideroad with George. Did 1hr50 min bikeriding up and down Weston Rd. Not very pleasant—cold and windy. Legs tired after.
June 3, 1988
AM: Rode bike to pool, did 1050m 21:57. 8 x 100m—between about 1:53 and 1:57—pool very crowded. Rode bike home, then rode to physio and back—almost ½ hr easy riding each way.
PM: Did “pull-strength” workout plus hamstring curls, leg extension. Worked hard 62 min, followed by 10 min hard on bike.
This week: 4 weight workouts, 3 swims, 2 long bike rides, 2hr52min total on stationary bike.
